DRC Aims to Double Tax Revenue From Mining

DRC officials plan to increase tax revenues in mining from 14.5% to 25% of the national budget by 2016, reports Congo FM.

“Exploitation of natural resources is key to our ambition of becoming an emerging market country by 2030,” said Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo at a mining conference.

While the DRC produced Africa’s largest amount of copper last year, mismanagement, corruption, and two decades of turmoil in Eastern DRC have hampered development of other minerals, including diamonds, gold, cassiterite, and coltan. Mining executives, however, warned that continual revision of the mining code could deter future investors.
