Noel Kambanda (@NoelKambanda), who lost both parents, two brothers, and a sister in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis, has taken to Twitter to assail self-styled Hotel Rwanda ‘hero’ Paul Rusesabagina for claiming in an open letter last week to be a “genocide survivor.” Before and during the genocide, then hotel manager Rusesabagina, a Hutu, was close to several top genocide planners and has appeared in their defense at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. While many moderate Hutus died during the genocide, the killings overwhelmingly targeted Rwanda’s Tutsi population of which only 150,000 survived. Rusesabagina’s claim last week is considered deeply offensive among the survivor community in Rwanda and abroad.
